Once You Have Tasted Flight …

Are you an adventure seeker? Do you dream of finding new experiences to thrill and excite you? If you’ve devoted your life to seeking out new adventures and pushing yourself to the limit, you may have found that it’s harder and harder to find the excitement that satisfies you. If you’ve ever dreamt of soaring above the clouds and taking in views that few others have experienced, consider building your own aircraft from the ground up. It is a wonderful experience to custom build an aircraft suited to you personally.

Reach Out to the Federal Aviation Administration

One of the first steps to take is to research Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. Reach out to the FAA Manufacturing Inspection District Office or Flight Standards District Office that’s located nearest to you. During this step, you can learn more about small airplanes and amateur-built aircraft. You’ll also find out what you need to do to comply with FAA regulations as you build your craft and when you’re ready to fly.

Commit Yourself to the Task

Prepare for a physical, financial, and time investment. You’ll probably spend upwards of 1,500 hours putting the pieces of your aircraft together. In addition to purchasing a kit, additional parts, and, of course, specialized tools, you may also need to pay for a few aviation workshops in your area. If you don’t have room for the aircraft on your own property, you may also need to pay for a workshop area large enough for the plane and for all the tools you’re using.

Enroll in Flight School and Get Your Pilot License

It is also necessary to obtain a pilot’s license before you can fly your aircraft. Rather than waiting until you’ve finished building your plane, start working on getting your license as soon as you submit the order for a kit to build your own experimental aircraft.

Take to the Air

With your pilot’s license and your aircraft complete, you should return to the FAA for registration and arrange inspections. At this point, you’re almost ready to complete one of the most thrilling adventures of your life: flying a plane that you built with your own hands.
